If centralizing on the cloud means it’s on someone else’s computer, then decentralizing means putting it on a bunch of other people’s computers.
I think part of the issue with these more independent platforms is that we want the convenience of centralization without the risk, but they’re inseparable. A centralized service has to share protocols and methods in order to talk to itself (or different parts of itself) but multiple decentralized alternatives don’t have that restriction. Which is why it’s difficult to build bridges and automation between them – it’s similar to needing to speak many different foreign languages at once. It’s gonna be hard.
