People want to be a legacy. It’s embedded in our biology. It makes us want to have kids, or to otherwise pass on what we’ve learned. It drives us to create, to shout into the void, and to put ourselves in the shot.
If I teach people, do I live on in them? If I teach someone to program, and they make a website, have we together made a child? In a way, and as far as the Internet knows, yes. The product of two came together to create a new, individual entity. A virtual legacy.
Then the Internet is full of them, if you’ve ever learned from someone and built that into work of your own. My children are scattered all over the web.
Self fulfillment is a terrific symptom but a terribly vague goal. What drives you?
